Summer is right around the corner and we’re lucky enough to already have some sunshine in the UK. I don’t know about you but whenever the sun comes out, I want my makeup to be super glowy and sun kissed!! I thought I’d share my favourite tips and products to achieve a perfectly highlighted complexion.
Skin Prep & Primers
Prepping your skin before a glowy makeup look is ESSENTIAL!! The whole look we’re going for is basically the effects of naturally hydrated and oily skin. To ensure that the complexion products are able to perform at their best make sure to moisturise your skin (and apply your SPF people!!) - if you want to give your skin an extra boost of hydration, I recommend applying a Hylauronic Acid serum beforehand, my favourite is from The Ordinary and it’s really affordable! In terms of moisturiser you can use whichever you like, but I have to say the Embryolisse Lait-Crème is my GO-TO before makeup – it gives such incredible hydration without being greasy or heavy and makeup sits on it so flawlessly.
Next it may be a good idea to use an illuminating or radiance primer, to be honest this part is not essential but it doesn’t hurt to give some extra hydration and glow before applying foundation. Primers often have a little tackiness to them which also helps with the longevity of your makeup, so a win win! I love the Bobbi Brown illuminating balm, the Laura Mercier Radiance Primer and Nars Radiance Primer.
Now if you are after something a little more intense you NEED a liquid illuminator in your life! I’m sure you’ve all heard of the Iconic London Illuminator Drops – they were the first brand to come out with a product like these and there are a few ways you can use these. Firstly you can obviously applying directly to any areas you would like to add some highlight after you’ve finished your base – if you’re doing this I would recommend applying either with your fingers or a damp sponge.
Another way I like to use these is almost like a primer, mix in with your moisturiser and it effectively works as an illuminating primer underneath your foundation. OR if you prefer you can add a couple of drops to your favourite foundation – I love to do this with my Fenty Beauty Profilt’r Longwear Mattifying Foundation, I want to keep the longevity of the foundation but sometimes want it to be more luminous and this gives you the best of both worlds.
As well as the Iconic London ones I also love the Cover FX Custom Enhancer Drops or the NYX Cosmetics Born to Glow Liquid Illuminator.
If you’re an oily skinned girl like me then I’m sure you’re very familiar with powder highlighters. This is the quickest and easiest way to get either a sheer or intense glow depending on the product. This is also the best option for those with oily skin as setting your foundation/concealer can often take some away some of the luminosity we already worked so hard to achieve. I tend to focus powder highlights just on the areas I want to bring light to, so my cheekbones, forehead, bridge and tip of my nose and sometimes cupids bow.
For a sheer glow I would opt for something like the Laura Mercier Candleglow Sheer Perfecting Powder or the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powders. However if like me you love an intense highlight the following are some of my absolute favourites – Anastasia Beverly Hills Amrezy Highlighter, Becca Cosmetics Opal Highlighter, Huda Beauty 3D Highlight Palettes and the Fenty Beauty Killawatt Highlighters. If you’re after something more affordable the Makeup Revolution Strobe Highlighter is amazing.
Glowy Setting Mists
Last but certainly not least we need to set the makeup in place, now any kind of setting spray/mist will leave a dewy look to the skin – it melts any powders and helps the makeup to look more skin-like BUT there are some setting mists that have a little extra glow if that’s your vibe! Though be careful of those that contain oil as that will likely remove all your hard work, oily facial mists are best for makeup free days!!
In terms of regular settings sprays the Morphe Continuous Setting Mist is my ULTIMATE FAVE but I also love a bit of Mac Fix +. If we’re talking about illuminating setting sprays then I think the Iconic London Prep Set Glow Spray is amazing, but be warned it can be quite intense!
